Since 2014, Euro-Argo has been taking the pulse of the ocean to better understand and predict its role in the climate system and its health. The European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) encompassing 12 EU Member States and Associated Countries, set up to coordinate and strengthen the national Argo programme.
Together, we provide the European contribution to the scientist-led International Argo programme established in 1999, which is a major component of the ocean observing system, and deliver free & open quality-controlled data to the research (climate and oceanography) and operational (e.g., Copernicus Marine Service and meteorological services) communities.

The Euro-Argo ERIC is managed by the ERIC Office, which provides central infrastructure that does not then need to be repeated in every member state. The ERIC Office can act on behalf of member states, providing expertise, and a chance to aggregate member states’ activities to create a larger critical mass of activity, for instance to reach a better level of interaction with the supply chain of float and sensor manufacturers. All of this raises governance issues that need to be addressed using best practice, and also with a view to closer integration into the landscape of European research infrastructures, especially those that also carry out environmental monitoring.
Euro-Argo Goals
The aspiration of the Euro-Argo ERIC is for Euro-Argo to provide 25% of the global OneArgo array. This 25% share is to be achieved as the sum of floats deployed by national programmes of ERIC members, together with any floats procured and deployed with funds awarded to and directly managed by the ERIC.

Why Join Euro-Argo ERIC?
Euro-Argo ERIC is a meeting point for Argo scientists and operators across Europe. The ERIC facilitates collaborations, exchanges on strategy, expertise & best practice, the development of common resources, and the provision of mutual support between its members. Participating in the ERIC allows you to develop, strengthen and expand your own national Argo programme, and increase its visibility. It provides tools and opportunities to reach out to research and operational user communities as well as national and European policy makers. At global level, your commitment contributes to ensuring the resilience and sustainability of the International Argo programme. Most importantly, Euro-Argo is a joint endeavour: being a member of the ERIC allows you to impact on its development and to contribute to shaping the European OneArgo strategy while aligning with your own needs.
- Membership is open to all EU Member States & Associated Countries.
- Applications must be formally submitted by a national authority (e.g. ministry or government agency).
- Countries may apply for participation either as a Member or as an Observer, depending on their level of preparation.
